Welcome to a day in the life with Tom Wells.
Typically, I come in to the office 3 days a week. My journey starts with the 6:50am train from Egham and I get into office at 8:00am. My first job is checking emails that have come in overnight. then dealing with anything urgent, taking a look ahead of the day, meetings, documents to prep and read. I like to get these things out of the way before my real day starts!
It normally starts with a couple of 15 minutes project daily catch-ups (2/3 of those depending how may projects involved in at the time). Then my day is a mixture of client meetings (supporting teams in their sessions), 1-2-1s with my direct reports, account management with my regular clients – making sure that projects on track from their perspective, things are going at the right speed, is there anything that needs to change?
Also, I like being on the office as it allows me to ‘be on call’ for anyone if people have questions or issues during the day. That way I can help to solve issues throughout the day rather than waiting for the official catch-up or problem-solving sessions.
I’m a creature of habit! I normally take a quick walk out to either Pret or Tongue & Brisket around the corner on Wardour Street.
Sometimes meetings with existing clients, sometimes with prospects. Research about the project (existing or potential new) depending on the stage of pipeline.
Internally, a couple times a week we have a resourcing meeting with the team to making sure that people have the right projects to work on and facilitate that through the Engagement Manager meeting on Friday. Also as part of the Leadership Team we have meetings to discuss things that are coming up in the business – make sure the business runs properly.
Time outside of meetings trying to develop internal reporting, streamline how we report what we’re doing- productivity etc. Being able to see the stats and figures at a glance makes planning and reporting back to the wider business much easier.
I am also the lead of Analyst cohort – we get together as a team at monthly meetings – over lunch – where we discuss what’s going on, any issues/challenges or any help people may need with L&D etc. We also go for dinner as a team every couple of months which is great for getting to know everyone better and spending some social time together.
Take train back and get home just before 7pm, have a meal and relax. Every now and then an evening out after work.
